Frida: a project dedicated to women’s recovery and empowerment in Italy
Italy / Well-being
February - March and May 2025
In Italy, it is estimated that women account for about one-third of people who use substances. However, due to gender stereotypes and social stigma, only one in five people accessing addiction support services is female.
This gap exists for several reasons. The weight of social stigma often leads women to hide their struggles for fear of judgment. Family-related concerns also play a significant role, such as the fear of losing custody of their children or being forced to remain in abusive or violent environments. Moreover, women are particularly vulnerable to situations of violence: according to the World Health Organization, 35% of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual violence, and in contexts of addiction, this violence is often closely intertwined with substance use.
At Mitsubishi Electric Italian Branch, in line with our commitment to the communities in which we operate, we have long supported Dianova Onlus, an organization that has been caring for people with substance use disorders for over 40 years.
This year, we specifically supported the Frida Project, which was created to break down these barriers and provide a safe space where women can rebuild trust in themselves, strengthen their self-esteem, and rediscover their own value. At the Garbagnate (MI) center, qualified professionals guide participants along a path designed to overcome stigma and self-stigma, restore dignity and confidence, enhance social skills, and promote self-care and self-acceptance.
The project offers practical tools through meaningful and engaging activities such as self-defense classes, dance therapy, group therapy, and prevention workshops. These experiences help women regain control of their lives and envision a future free from addiction and personal hardship.
On 15th May 2025, some of our colleagues had the opportunity to attend a final project meeting with the women involved in the Frida Project. It was a powerful and moving moment of sharing, during which the participants openly talked about their journeys of awareness, personal growth, renewed self-esteem, and rediscovery of their self-worth. The meeting reminded us that real change is possible when people are truly listened to and placed at the center of care. We are deeply grateful to the women who bravely and generously shared their stories with us.
